Doctor Information

Histolab Pty Ltd was born from pathologist Andrew Ryan’s desire to provide independent boutique histopathology services tailored to the requirements of the individual referring doctor.  In most circumstances, he is personally acquainted with the referrer, and may have provided pathology teaching to them during their specialist training.

He takes time to ensure his reports are clear, concise and consistent, and contain all information relevant to the referring doctor.  In the event of an unexpected diagnosis, or when further information or consultation is required, Andrew will contact the referrer directly for further discussion.

The laboratory has a dedicated and experienced courier service to collect specimens from consulting rooms or operating theatres, and deliver them to the laboratory.  We understand the importance of timely turnaround of results for the doctor and patient.  In most cases, the referrer will receive their reports a day or two after the procedure has been performed.  Feel free to contact us should you require more urgent turnaround.

Andrew encourages you to contact him directly should you wish to discuss a particular case or diagnosis.

A limited frozen section service is also offered, for intra-operative diagnosis.  Please contact us to discuss should you be interested in this facility.

Please note that we now perform direct immunofluorescence on fresh biopsy material, and most immunohistochemistry is performed in-house.  However we do not provide a cytology or microbiology service.

Billing

We endeavour to provide the patient with informed consent outlining our billing policy.  We understand that you don’t want to have to explain our fees to your patients, so we encourage you to give them our tear-off account information leaflets, or direct them to this website.  Do not hesitate to let us know should you have any specific billing requests for a particular patient, or your patients as a group. Histolab has entered into agreements with the majority of private health funds.  This means that should your patient belong to one of the "no gap" health funds listed under "Account Information", Histolab will bill that fund directly and they will not receive an account, for any pathology received as a result of a procedure perfomed by you in a hospital or accredited day procedure facility.  Further billing information can be found under “Account Information.”

Please note that as of 1/9/14, Medibank Private and Australian Health Management (AHM) have chosen not to renew contracts with Histolab.  They join nib and GMHBA as the other major funds choosing not to negotiate with Histolab for direct billing of their clients.  You may wish to point this out to your patients and suggest they consider joining one of the participating funds instead.
